chapter eighteen

kellan finch

kellan knocked on their apartment door. He knew better than to walk in like he used to, especially after walking in on them having a spa night. He could already tell they were running around like headless chickens trying to get ready.

The door swung open, and Kellan found Sam, with a pale face, eyes wide enough to be saucers.

‘They’re getting ready,’ he said hesitantly.

A loud scream erupted from the hallway. Sam looked behind him. ‘This always happens when they let Circe do their hair.’

Kellan nodded; he wasn’t sure he wanted to know what Circe was doing to his friends in there.

The bathroom door opened wide from the hallway, and Circe waltzed out.

‘I heard that, Samuel,’ Circe said, launching a throw pillow at Sam’s head.

Kellan caught it before it reached him. ‘And that scream was because Agatha poked Elnora in the eye with a stick of mascara.’

Circe only scoffed. ‘Anyway, they don’t come for gentleness, they come for results.’

‘Are you finished torturing them? Because we have to leave soon,’ Kellan said, looking up from his watch.

‘My dearest Agatha is doing the finishing touches.’ Circe walked into the kitchen and fed the cats.

Poe was curled up in the corner. Kellan picked him up to cuddle, and the cat purred and snuggled into the crook of his neck in acceptance.

Sam paced around the living room, constantly fixing the cuffs of his suit jacket sleeve.

‘Stop pacing. You’re giving me whiplash.’ Kellan laughed through his words.

Sam stopped letting out a harsh breath; he raised his chin to speak.

‘You don’t get it!’ He ran his hands through his messy hair. ‘They’re ashamed of Elnora because she is with me.’

Elnora’s parents are who he was talking about. Kellan hadn’t really thought about their relationship. He always got the impression that Sam took it more seriously than Elnora, but Kellan supposed that if Sam had considered meeting her parents, then perhaps the relationship was more serious than he’d originally thought.

‘But she’s not ashamed of you; if anything, she is proud of you, she shows you off constantly.’ Poe squirmed out of his arms with a muffled meow.

‘Only as a way to get back at her parents.’ He folded his arms. ‘Her family hate humans.’

‘If they say anything to you, they’ll have to deal with me,’ Kellan said, opening his navy-blue jacket to reveal a dagger tucked away in its holster.

Sam’s russet eyes widened, giving a lopsided grin. ‘I don’t know if they’re the type of people you should piss off.’

‘They don’t scare me.’

It was true. They were a wealthy family, but their powers weren’t superior; they couldn’t really hurt him unless they wanted to deal with the Queen of Fire and Air.

Circe emerged back in the living room when Agatha left the bathroom.

‘They’re all done. Your breaths are about to be blown away,’ the Green Witch cheered.

Elnora walked out, wearing a silky lilac dress draping just below her knee, trimmed with feathers. Kellan thought it was excessive, but Sam thought the opposite.

‘You’re absolutely divine.’ Sam chuckled, pulling her into a hug.
